Tonga Post asks us to inform the designated operators of other Union member countries that Cyclone Gita, a major Category 4 storm, hit Tonga on the evening of Monday, 12 February 2018. The country has been affected by damaging and life-threatening winds and destructive cyclone conditions, particularly the main island of Tongatapu, where the main office of exchange is located.
The airport has been closed, flights have been cancelled, and the transport, processing and delivery of inbound and outbound mail to and from Tonga has been suspended. Electric power was also interrupted.
As from 16 February 2018, the situation is beginning to improve and power, as well as online connectivity, has been restored at certain post offices.
Tonga Post thanks designated operators for their understanding and will inform them via EmIS once the situation has returned to normal.
